Paruresis Tips - The Paruresis Breath Holding Technique
The Paruresis breath holding technique is a method that many Paruresis sufferers have succesfully used to get a flow started in a restroom. The Paruresis breath holding technique works by increasing the levels of carbon dioxide in the blood stream, which can reduce anxiety and cause the relaxation of the urinary sphincter muscle.
First, exhale the majority of air from your lungs (around 75%), but do not doa big inhale of air first though as this will counter the desired affect.
Hold your breath and after around 45 seconds people often experience the relaxation of the urinay sphincter muscle, resulting in a flow to start.
If the stream stops, then try exhaling to start it up again.
It is a technique that will improve as it is praticed over time. When you get to the stage of the technique working all the time then you will naturally feel more relaxed as you enter a restroom and will find it easier to pee because you know you have the breath holding technique to use if need be.
If you struggle to hold your breath then you can try pinching your nose as well and it is also worth praticing breath holding in general before employing the technique in a restroom. As always it is recommended to discuss the technique with a Doctor before hand, and never hold your breath to the level of extreme discomfort.
The breath holding technique will not work if you go into the restooom in an anxious state, but will help to get a flow going if you are at a reasonably relaxed state.
If the technique does not work for you at first, then explore alternative treatment methods to reduce your level of anxiety in a restroom. This might include support groups and just continued practice of various other techniques. Then return to the Paruesis breath holding method further down the line for another try.
