Pat Eddery - Famous Uk Jockey And Trainer

Patrick James John 'Pat' Eddery OBE, was born in County Kildare

, Ireland on 18th March 1952. He was a flat racing jockey from 1967 until 2003 and rode the winning horses of 4,632 British flat horse races, an achievement only exceeded by Sir Gordon Richards. His father, Jimmy Eddery was a jockey also as is his brother Paul Eddery. Pat was Champion Jockey eleven times, matching Lester Piggott, rode three winners of the Epsom Derby and is joint-holder of the record for the most wins in the Prix de l'Arc De Triomphe, having had four victories in this very famous race. In 1990, 1991 and 1996 he gained the distinction of winner of the inaugural Lester Award for Flat Race Jockey of the Year and in 2002 and 2003 he received Flat Jockey Special Recognition awards before retiring as a jockey at the end of the 2003 flat racing season.

In the month of July in 2005, Pat Eddery was granted a training license and has a stable of 40 horses at Musk Hill Stud in Nether Winchendon, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The business called 'Pat Eddery Racing' is a racehorse syndication concern, which gives ordinary people the chance to own shares in racehorses. Pat's very first horse he trained was called Perez that finished second, in an all weather race, at Wolverhampton Racecourse in December 2005. His first real training triumph was with the horse Visionist in a handicap race at Kempton Park in April 2006.

Now he is in his sixth full season as a trainer and he is very happy to have a yard full of promising horses and hopes to build on the successes of 2009 and 2010, with forty-seven winners, which included listed and group class races. There is a good mix of syndicates and individually owned horses and, for the first time, with some strong older horses included. At Pat Eddery Racing there is a good, combined team effort and they are very fortunate to have a highly experienced team in both the purchasing of bloodstock and the running of syndicates. Their aims are to provide an opportunity for anyone who wants to participate in racehorse ownership and to give their owners an excellent level of personal service.

His ex-wife, Carolyn who comes from a distinguished horse racing background, is the daughter of flat racing jockey Manny Mercer, the niece of the jockey Joe Mercer and granddaughter of the jockey Harry Wragg. Pat and Carolyn had two children together, a son and a daughter. Pat Eddery was awarded an honorary OBE in 2005.
