Patients Need To Understand That Liposuction Procedures Take Time To Recover From
Every surgical procedure has a specific recovery time essential to the success of the procedure
. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that takes time to recover from. The recovery time and the procedures have evolved and changed over the years. There are traditional methods that have been used for a number of years. New methods have now been developed for the drainage of liquids used during the tumescent technique.
New methods have been needed for various reasons. The main problems that were occurring had to do with the mass amount of liquid that needed draining to prevent infection. New methods known as open drainage and bimodal compression are the best post-operative methods that have been created.
These new methods have dramatically improved the comfort of the patient. They have also shortened the healing process allowing for lower costs and less hospital time. It has also decreased the amount of times the patient needs to see the surgeon.
With the tumescent procedure the large amount of liquid used has made it necessary for drainage. Open drainage has become the more efficient and effective way to drain the liquid. The open wounds have been found to heal faster and with a more accelerated recovery.
The amount of swelling, pain, bruising, and convalescence time is greatly reduced by open drainage with bimodal compression. However, many surgeons continue to use the traditional methods that were used before the invention of the tumescent liposuction procedures.
There is usually a lot of swelling, bruising, and tenderness due to the amount of pressure and stress traditional methods put on the body. The traditional methods consist of closing the incisions with sutures and then a high amount of compression with elastic garments are placed on the area for two weeks or more. Then there are also the post-operative follow-up visits with the surgeon that are often time consuming.
The swelling, bruising, and tenderness are usually caused by the techniques used for the tumescent anesthetic solutions. These solutions, which are a mix of epinephrine and lidocaine, can get trapped under the skin after the procedures. There may also be subcutaneous lymphatic capillaries or swelling that may also have been caused by the procedure.
Overall, if a considerable amount of drainage is allowed to exit the body after liposuction there has been found to be an easier recovery process. Open drainage was invented to help prevent the solution from being trapped under the skin by allowing it to drain slowly. Traditional methods cover the area with a compression elastic garment for shaping.
