. They are both types of homes. Patio homes are constructed in such a way that each house is attached to the other. They have a design that is similar. The land on which the houses are built is not really large so they are built close together. The dwellings are not very big because of the size of the land.

There are shared walls separating each home and these walls give them privacy. Normally, they have no garden but there is a patio that faces a common area. Common areas including driveways are shared by all community members. The dwellings are located in secluded suburbs in the countryside. The communities are small therefore each person knows the other. They also restrict the entrants to the residences thus giving a sense of security.

The homes are maintained by a homeowners association. Among the services that the association caters for are lawn mowing, security guards and garbage collection. It also caters for pest control on the exterior, landscaping and painting of the outside areas. A fee is paid for the services. Architectural control is also done by this association. This is to ensure that there is no mushrooming of structures that interfere with the original design and therefore maintain the integrity and beauty of these homes. Some of them have swimming pools and clubhouses which are shared by all community.

Single detached family homes are residential houses standing alone. The land on which the house is built is much larger than the house. There is therefore some free space which if referred to as yard. There is also a garage for vehicles. The house can be a bungalow or maisonette and it can be as large as the owner wishes. Only members of one family live here. The whole space around the residence is private to that particular family and its owner.

These homes are usually found near towns where there are amenities like schools. If the owner wishes, he can extend his house. He can even make alterations to the design of his house both the interior and exterior. This of course depends on the area's by-laws.

No home management fees are charged. All repair and maintenance costs are the home owner's responsibility. The same applies to collection of garbage, upkeep of lawns, security and landscaping.
