Patriotic Ribbon Flowers

Its summertime, and that means Independence Day is right around the corner and time for some outdoor fun all summer long as well

. The 4th of July is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends for an outdoor party. If you are the host, you may be thinking what you can do to make this festive event even more festive. You dont need a lot of dcor when you are outside, but a few well chosen table decorations can give your party some pizzazz. Bouquets of ribbon flowers in patriotic colors add a festive touch to your July 4th celebration.

These simple flowers are not only cute, but make wonderful take-home gifts for your guests for them to remember your festive and fun event. Heres what you need to get started:

Ribbon (red, white & blue)

Buttons

Floral wire

Floral tape

Needle

Thread

Scissors

Glue gun

How to make a looping flower:

You can use any width of ribbon, just vary the number of ribbons used to adjust for thicker or thinner ribbon. If using a thin ribbon for example, cut 8 pieces, 6 inches long. Arrange the ribbons with the centers overlapping. Put a small stitch or two through the center to hold them in place. Now, take the free ends and bring them into the center in loops and secure with another couple stitches to hold them in place.

Secure a button to the center either with a stitch or hot glue. Bend the floral wire in half and slide it under the stitches on the back of the flower to form a stem. Wrap the wire with floral tape to finish.

How to make a fan flower:

This style of ribbon flower uses a thicker ribbon. A one inch grosgrain works well, but any style of ribbon will do. Sew a basting stitch along the edge of the ribbon. When you pull on the thread, the ribbon naturally gathers like a fan to form a flower.

Thread a piece of floral wire through the holes in the button(s) and slide it through the center of the ribbon "flower". You can dot some hot glue onto the back of the button to secure it to the ribbon. Wrap the wire with floral tape, as before.

Make a variety of each type of flower and use multi-colored patriotic ribbon or solid hues. Arrange the flowers in canning jars or bud vases and place them on your buffet and guest tables. When the party is over your guests will have a lovely keepsake to take home.
