Paul the Octopus, the eight-legged oracle who rose to fame during the 2010 World Cup for his flawless record in predicting game results including the final, has died peacefully in his sleep, the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre said on Tuesday 26th October.

"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a statement.

He was two and a half years old and had believed to have died of natural causes, as common octopuses live on average no more than three years.

"He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes," said Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll.

Paul rose to worldwide stardom when he predicted all of Germanys results in the 2010 World Cup, and also the final between Netherlands and Spain.

For his predictions, two boxes each containing the flags of the opposing teams and a mussel, his favourite food, was lowered into the tank off the salty soothsayer. Then the first box Paul would enter by wrenching open the lid to feast on a tasty mussel, was deemed the team likely to win.

His astonishing ability made him a global media phenomenon, watched by a myriad of reporters, his predictions was also made live on German news channels.

Psychic Paul became a worldwide superstar, but fell out with fans whose teams he failed to tip.

He was slammed in the British press for treason after tipping Germany to beat his "home country" which they duly did, 4-1.

He then fell offside with bitter German fans who threatened to turn him into sushi after he correctly predicted a semi-final defeat for the Mannschaft against Spain.

Stung by Paul's "treachery", some sections of the 350 000-strong crowd watching the game on giant screens in Berlin sang anti-octopus songs.

The sea center is now finalizing funeral plans, as Paul's body is currently kept in cold storage. They have already decided to cremate him, though have yet to decide where his final resting place lays.

"While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action."
