Pedestrian Accident Lawsuits

Not many of us spend time thinking about the possibility that we might be injured in a pedestrian-automobile accident in our lifetimes.

But unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are quite common in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that about 69,000 pedestrians are hurt in traffic crashes annually. About 5,000 pedestrians are killed every year in traffic collisions.

A pedestrian is injured in a traffic collision every 8 minutes and killed about every 2 hours in a traffic collision.

Most pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas.

About 70 percent of all pedestrian deaths were men.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday accounted for about half of the pedestrian fatalities.

Alcohol involvement of the pedestrian or the driver was involved in about 48% of the traffic collision pedestrian fatalities.

Pedestrian Accidents: Common Types of Injuries

When an automobile collides with a pedestrian, an injury almost always results. Most pedestrian injuries, according to an NHTSA report, are caused by contact with the front of a vehicle. Some of the most common serious injuries associated with pedestrian-auto collisions include:

Broken bones (legs, arms, hips and ribs are the most likely to be fractured)

Spinal cord injury

Head/brain injury

Coma

Internal bleeding and/or organ damage

Pedestrian Accident Liability

Careless driving and a driver's disregard for traffic laws are two of the most frequently reported causes of pedestrian accidents. Other negligent factors reported are poor street engineering, inadequate street lighting and poor placement of bus stops.
