Family dentists may be considered general dentists or pediatric dentists

. However, there are some important differences between general dentists and pediatric dentists. Their dental school training and required dental knowledge and licensing is different. Also general dentists and pediatric dentists differ in their dental specialties of dental services and care. However, both general dentists and pediatric dentists are known for providing dental care for the whole family. The whole family can make an appointment with the general dentists or pediatric dentists office for routine visits and all be seen by the dentists on the same day during the same time. Of course a dentists office will need to know how many people in the family are coming to the dentists routine visit so that the dentists office can schedule sufficient time for the dental appointment to ensure that the dentists office doesn't get behind schedule.

Family dentists are family friendly. General dentists offices are trained and capable of providing dental care for all ages within a family from old to young and in-between dental patients. General dentists provide preventative dental care and dental instruction for a family on how to maintain good dental health for all members of the family. General dentists usually work with a team of dental hygienists and dental assistants to efficiently and effectively provide dental care for all members of a family during a routine dental visit.

Pediatric dentists have all the same dental school as general dentists, plus more dental school training. Pediatric dentists can practice general dentistry on any and all dental patients of any age. However, pediatric dentists have chosen to focus their dental treatment and dental services on children. Dental patients who are children have their own set of dental issues because of the dental stage of life they are in.

With baby teeth growing in and then falling out and then adult teeth coming in, it's no wonder why pediatric dentists need to study more in dental school to understand and prepare for the dental treatments and dental services required to serve young dental patients. Pediatric dentists not only have dental training in dental treatment and dental services for young dental patients, but pediatric dentists also have dental training in how to talk to and serve young dental patients. Pediatric dentists learn to talk to kids at their level because they have studied child psychology and other dental school courses to know how to best provide dental services to children.

Pediatric dentists have more dental school to complete than general dentists. However, both types of dentists have the basic four years of dental school for the general dentistry degree and general dentistry license to practice. Pediatric dentists and general dentists alike, can serve an entire family with preventative dental care at one time. Pediatric dentists focus their services on the dental treatment and dental services for children, but pediatric dentists also may choose to take family dental patients when they are the family members of the children who receive routine dental visits with the pediatric dentists. Or pediatric dentists can choose to focus entirely on providing dental care and dental treatments to children.
