Runners from all over the world flock to the tiny province of Prince Edward Island to build their motivation and to lengthen their daily runs through some of the most beautiful running back drops in the world. There is absolutely nothing routine about running through the woodlands on PEI. It doesn't matter whether or not you prefer to fun on concrete or like the cushion of the red clay rural roadways, you will be challenged by the myriad of cross country trials that will only increase your passion for running.

Many people come to the island with the sole intention of running along the coastlines, on the beaches to feel the ocean spray on their face as their lungs are cleaned out by the cool salty clean air. You can't help but feel good while running past pastoral farmlands, postcard fishing villages or tall red cliffs overlooking white sand beaches.

If you prefer a more challenging terrain, then move inland to the hilly countryside, primarily to the southern parts of the island such as Points East Coastal Drive in Kings Country. Or choose to run along the south shore in Queen's County. Look for signs directing you to Anne's Land for the best of running experiences.

It's no hindrance if you find yourself on other parts of Prince Edward Island. Cavendish and Dalvay offer up excellent running paths, as well. Feel free to take a job through the tree lined streets of the cities, villages and towns, running past historic architecture dating back to the 1800's. According to Canada, there are more than 60 woodland and scenic trails devoted to running on Prince Edward Island. Pick up a copy of Nature Trails of PEI or request one from your travel agent.

Running is also allowed along the massive Confederation Trail which runs from end to end of the island. The Confederation Trail is 350 km of pathway set alongside an old railway bed, that is available to walkers, hikers, bikers, as well as runners. Ask the Canadian Visitors Information Centers for help in formulating your summer running plans.
