Pendant alarms are the ideal solution for people living alone or at risk of falling and allow the individual to raise an alarm and call their carer[s]
. These devices are becoming more sophisticated as technology improves but fortunately they are also easy to set-up and install.
Alarm pendants for the elderly are most commonly supplied as a pendant worn around the neck on a loose fitting lanyard or worn round the wrist on a wrist strap. Both types are designed to ensure that the person at risk has easy access to the device should they need to activate an alarm.
When activated the pendant alarm notifies the carer either via a paging system or landline, depending on model design. Paging systems are typically radio frequency and are therefore relevant when a carer is very localised whereas more advanced units contact the carer via a normal landline over any distance. In either scenario, the carer is notified almost instantly once the help call is activated.
The user activates a help call by pressing a single button on the pendant. For those with dexterity concerns a pendant can be replaced with a larger jelly button with which to activate the alarm.
Some advanced features with the pendants give the user a 2-way communication facility so that they can talk to the carer via the pendant and also answer calls. These more advanced units are supplied with a base station which is connected to a normal telephone landline.
When selecting an alarm pendant, particularly when family members and neighbours are the nominated carers, it is important to consider who will be the first carers to be notified when the alarm is activated. Ease of contact, location, ability to deal with a situation and speed of response are all factors to consider.
