Pendant lightings are electronic fixtures which are used by today's homes not only to illuminate their residences and other building structures but also for decorative purposes to liven up its interior as well as its exterior parts.

A pendant light, which is also sometimes referred to as a "suspender" or "drop", is a single light that is hung from the ceiling and suspended by a long electrical cord where electric current is supplied to light up the bulb, which may either be made of fluorescent or incandescent.

Although there is a minor disadvantage in using a pendant light instead of a regular lighting fixture (the illumination that the pendant light emits is limited), the advantages brought about by its use far outweighs the single nuisance of luminosity limitation.

It is very decorative and can highlight a special place or furnishing in the area. Pendant lights can be used to liven up the place by using it to illuminate paintings or special flower vases, or particular furniture like a sofa.

Althoughpendant lighting appear classy, chic and expensive, homeowners need not spend too much to decorate and illuminate their residences with these elegant looking pendant lights, since it is relatively easy to make and create.

All that is needed are light bulbs (incandescent or fluorescent), electrical sockets, electrical wires, frames, chain or wire or fishing line (to support the electrical wires where the light will be hanging), old lamp shade frame or lamp globes (which will give the pendant light its character and design).

The type of bulb to be used would really depend on the taste of the homeowner. If he or she wants a warm illumination or glow, then the incandescent bulb is the way to go. If this type of bulb is used, a light dimmer may be used to control the dimness or brightness of the light. Fluorescent bulbs are not susceptible to this kind of effect. The length of the light bulb from the ceiling is another consideration which is left to the discretion of the home owner. If, however, the pendant light is to be used for the illumination of a table, the suggested distance between the table and the lamp is usually 48 inches or two feet.

The lamp globes are what make the character of thependant light. It may be made of old lamp shade frames or it may even be a totally new creation of the home owner, or a brand new frame bought from the local light store.
