Penile Papules: Not As Weird As They Look
Penile papules can be extremely alarming when discovered for the first time
, because many people will immediately associate strange-looking growths on any area of their body with potentially being a tumor. Rest assured, however, that these relatively common bumps are not as abnormal as they appear.
Penile papules, known scientifically as hirsuties coronae glandis, are small bumps that grow around the ridge of the tip of the male penis. They are flesh-colored and shaped like small, dome-shaped bumps that usually grow to be no more than a few millimeters wide. They usually appear in a single row or multiple rows and grow in a circular formation around the tip of the penis.
While not incredibly common, they are said to be found in as much as 25 percent of all adult men around the world, according to various studies. They are more common in men who have not been circumcised, and younger males in their twenties and thirties are most likely to see them develop.
Most importantly, penile papules are not a disease or anything that has been transmitted sexually. They develop as part of an individual's own unique characteristics, which leaves some individuals predestined to have them develop and others free of them for the entirety of their lives.
Equally important is the fact that they should not be painful or harmful to the individual, aside from potentially becoming uncomfortable during sexual activity. In most cases, any sensation - discomfort or otherwise - that develops from these growths is specific to each individual case, as some men report that they increase sexual pleasure while others seek to have them removed to alleviate discomfort during this type of activity.
Despite the fact that there are no medically-necessary reasons to have them removed, many individuals choose to have this done anyways simply because of their strange and potentially awkward appearance.
The most effective methods of removal involve using a CO2 laser or a device known as a hyfrecator - which emits electrical pulses - to vaporize the penile papules in an out-patient procedure. These procedures typically leave only minor scarring that heals in shirt order, and do not have any significant potential hangups when it comes to recovery.
At the same time, there are many over-the-counter home remedies available that claim to be able to remove penile papules, and in many cases these topical creams, ointments and other products can cause more harm than good. Most doctors and other medical professionals only recognize the aforementioned surgical procedures as safe and effective methods for removal, and using the many various home remedies is not typically recommended by medical professionals.
