Cover letters are important when you're looking at rsums

. It bothers me if a cover letter looks like an afterthought, and all too often that's exactly how they look. As an employer I want to know your offering to my office and why you believe you'll be a great fit. Your cover letter is a perfect instrument for telling me this than your rsum.

HR screeners have to look at an awful lot of rsums and it's hard to stand out. Here are a few pointers to study to get you through a weary organization HR person and into an interview room.

If your cover letter looks like you simply pasted the companys name into a template with recycled content you probably will not get noticed.

Do not simply inform me about your possibilities, your current position, what your interests are, or why you're so genuinely awesome. Demonstrate to me offer the organisation. How are you going to employ your skills to add to the office?


Did you reference anything about the business you're applying to? If your cover letter has no conection to the job posting other than "I would be a fantastic fit for X position." go back to the job posting and select specific needs the employer has and show how you can address them.

For example: My business builds accounting websites. Have you ever even looked at a CPA website? It might take a few minutes, but they'll be well spent. Search "CPA Websites". Find out what I'm doing. It won't take long. While you're at it take a look at my competitors. You'll want to know what they're doing too. Take a look at a few accounting websites. Do you have a favorite? What do you like about it?

You don't have to dazzle me with some kind of ingenious brainstorm. I'm not asking you to re-invent the wheel. If you can simply show me a real enthusiasm for the trade you'll have succeeded in standing out, and your chances of being offered an interview will have improved enormously.

If your target is in fact "I want to use your company as a stepping stone." an employer might question "What's the problem with our company?"

If an employer posts content in their job listing about their team and culture and you opt not to learn it or mention it in your cover letter you've squandered an invaluable point of conversation. Relate to the job posting and the company website! Mention things that resonated with you and why you'd like to be a part of the company. Talk about what you can add to the culture.


If you select not to pen a cover letter at all an office may choose not to even examine your resume.

Writing a sound cover letter is challenging, but if you examine and process what's in the work posting and express how you can specifically handle a company's needs you'll get noticed.

Feedback from an acquaintance or mentor can be very helpful. If you require assistance and you are looking for feedback don't balk, just mail them a sample of your cover letter and resume and the occupation posting you're applying for.
