Pentagon Announces Release Of Smartphone App To Monitor Troops Moods
Last month the Pentagon released a new Smartphone App to help the troops
. The T2 Mood Tracker (from the National Center for Telehealth and Technology) won first place in the General Wellness category this year in the militarys Apps4Army (A4A) competition as a way to self-monitor the moods and stress levels of our troops and veterans. Currently the app is only available for Android Smartphones, but a version for the iPhone is expected early next year, according to an article by LEO SHANE III, Stars And Stripes Stripe Central, at Stripes.com.

Doctors and therapists can use the shared information to assist in patient treatment. The idea behind the T2 Mood Tracker is to have a running record of the patients moods rather than rely on patient recall. Perry Bosmajian, a psychologist with the center, said in a statement. The best record of an experience is when its recorded at the time and place it happens.
What is the benefit of self monitoring your moods? With each self-evaluation, notes on environmental experiences impacting the emotional state can be added. It can be a self help tool or it can be shared with their therapist or doctor. The data is collected in real time, giving a more accurate picture of the common deployment related issues like post-traumatic stress, brain injury, depression and anxiety. The results are tracked and can be analyzed over a period of days, weeks or months with a visual analogue rating scale. By adding notes daily, the user is recording events that can correlate between daily routines and emotional experiences. Notes may include information such as when a medication was started, changed or stopped, dates of injuries, starting a job, starting or ending a marriage, etc. This gives the therapist or doctor some valuable tools to evaluate patterns of emotions.
How secure is the data? Like any data stored on your Smartphone, the data is as secure as your phone. If there is a concern about security, security features should be installed on your phone to protect the data. Because it is a self-monitoring app, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996) concerns do not apply while the data is stored or when it is shared.
Will the new T2 Mood Tracker be widely used by service people and veterans? With the trend for more and more technology for treating patients, I believe the push will come from the therapists and doctors to use apps similar to this one. It is kind of like the old fashioned journal or diary, just upgraded to the 21st century.
