Perfecting the Fine Art of Delegation
Many of us find difficulty in delegation. When a difficult or important job arises, asking someone else to do it becomes even harder. But assuming the task is necessary, and that handling it isn't the best use of your time, delegation is imperative.
Why Delegate?
Your employees need to perform at their highest levels. You're wasting human resources if this isn't the case. Providing new challenges and responsibilities for employees is essential in helping them create greater job security and grow professionally.
You also need to perform at your highest level. If you're not, you're wasting the company's money and your own potential. Perfecting the art of delegation is one way to boast the quality of your performance.
How to Delegate?
1. Match the assignment to the person. Choose the person whose role makes the most sense for the assignment. This may not be your best and brightest. Do it anyway. Other employees will never gave an opportunity to grow and excel if you always give the choicest assignments to your high performers.
2. Be willing to invest training time to help your employee do it right. A little investment here will reap big returns later. No time to train? Then don't delegate. But if you don't have time now, chances are, you won't have time later.
3. Be clear about the results you want to achieve. Delegate the objective, not the procedure. Your employee may find a more efficient way to get the job done. Over-managing increases the chance you will miss out on this opportunity.
4. Delegate authority as well. If your employee doesn't have authority for a project, the employee will be sabotaged. This wastes your time as others attempt to go around your employee to get to you. Delegating authority builds in accountability. Communicate this to the employee taking on the project and to others who need to know.
5. Wherever possible, delegate whole projects, not pieces of the whole. If you can't delegate the whole project, don't let that stop you from delegating tasks that make sense.
