Performance Management Strategies That Actually Work

Performance management takes a long and deep look at the performance of a business and the employees that work within

. Some people may ask what is performance management. And get it confused with peoples behaviours. Instead, performance management is concerned with the performance of the team and making systems as efficient as possible. Smart goals can help to get people focussed and heading in the right direction.

Assessing the performance of everyone in the business is vital to the success of said business. Yet it is something that is sadly overlooked my many organisations.

10 Reasons Why Performance Management works

Focus on the performance rather than the behaviours

This means that within performance management, we are looking at the end performance, rather than the individual behaviours or traits. So it is less personal and offers a more in depth review of how the company is tracking, what can be improved and a way forward, without attacking individuals.

Increased Productivity and Profit

Performance management can increase productivity and therefore revenue and profit. Think about whether you would be happy to use a car that leaked petrol. Think about how expensive that would be. A business is the same.

Improved Communication

Setting up performance management systems allow for managers to communicate effective with employees, and it works the other way around as well. There will be regular meetings and reporting structures in order to make sure that performance objectives are being met, and this allows for many more opportunities to communicate.

Better appraisals

Instead of everyone dreading their appraisals and there being no clarity around things, using performance management strategies allows for more focus to be placed on the important issues. Plans are set, assistance is given where needed, and everything becomes easier as everyone is working towards common performance goals.

Skill development

A large factor in performance management is assessing the skill set needed for certain outcomes to happen. Both parties have to commit to a training and development programme so that the desired outcomes are achieved. Giving employees ongoing training and personal development allows for employees to feel part of the business and that they are playing a part in helping the organisation meet their goals. Real and relevant planning of training and development programmes is a winning formula for all businesses.

Everyone is equal

In the sense that everyone knows the rules, know what is being assessed and how it is being monitored, everyone is equal. There is a better guide for assessing employees and their performance which is on equal footing and based on performance. There are pre determined objectives and goals that are both company wide as well as personal.

Easier goal setting

Sometimes it is hard to set goals for certain people doing certain jobs, if there are no clear goals or targets. Support jobs are particularly hard to set goals for, if employees are not directly involved in clients or targets. Placing the focus on performance standards can be a great way to get the employee looking to raise their capabilities.

Framework for improvement

If you want to improve performance, you cannot just say to yourself or any employees to simply perform better. It makes no sense, has different meanings to different people and is not measurable. Using a performance management system allows for tangible goals and understandable outcomes to be set and committed by all.

Flexibility and growth

Performance management allows all parties to be flexible if certain goals or targets become too large, and also allow for effective growth of an employees skill set. Having this flexibility to pull back, or push harder depending upon the work load of the business, the individual and their priorities and the other team members is a great advantage.

Freedom for talking

A non threatening performance management review allows a safe place for employees to talk about outside factors such as their personal life that may be affecting their productivity at work. Once identified, these can usually be worked through or managed.

So instead of asking what is performance management, now you know that it is a great way to enhance the performance of any team, and that performance management can be greatly enhanced by the use of smart goals.
