Performing a Zerg rush in Starcraft

Everyone loves StarCraft. It's the granddaddy of every modern RTS. The timeless story of Jim and Sarah, the brilliant balance of the three races, nearly everything was perfect in StarCraft.

One of the more popular races was the brutal and fast Zerg. The Zerg, in the game, are a hive mind race of insectoid lizards that breed and mutate, creating different strands of their species in a fast version of cellular meiosis. The Zerg could take over planets in days.

But how does this play out in game? The Zerg have some of the fastest build times and the fastest units. The voracious Zergling is a Battle.Net favorite, with its claws and speed, and the Hydrolisk is probably next on the list of most useful Zerg units. The much-feared cry of "Ling Rush!" is often heard in games, surprising and destroying a newbie players base in seconds. But how is such a feat produced? The strategy is quite simple.

1. Begin exploring with your Overlord as soon as possible.

This will give you an aerial view of the battlefield, often before any opponents have ground-to-air defenses. This way you can find the location of your enemies long before they have any idea where your base is.

2. Build a lot of Drones.

Unlike the Terran or Protoss, the Zerg rely on their resource gathering units as buildings as well. Your Drones are lost when they mutate, so make sure you are building as many as you can. Start building basic buildings now, like Extractors, Spawning Pits, and Creep Colonies. These will give you a decent defense if another player attacks you early in the game.

3. As soon as possible, build a Spawning Pit.

This will give you the ability to produce Zerglings, which will compromise the bulk of your rush forces. When the Spawning Pit is finished, start building some 'lings!

4. Build more than one Hive.

This will expand your unit production capabilities, as each can produce three eggs at once. In early game, three eggs can count for six Zerglings, which in itself is not a bad attack force.

5. Use Zerglings as much as possible in early rushes, but begin work on Hydrolisks.

Hydrolisks provide a good backup to Zerglings in terms of size and power. A force of six Zerglings and six Hydrolisks can easily overwhelm a small Terran or Protoss base.

6. Rush.

This is important. Too many players wait too long to rush, giving their enemies time to build units. The Zerg do have the fastest build times, but that is pointless unless a player uses those times to his advantage. Remember- strike first, strike fast, and strike hard!
