What is the difference between cologne and perfume
?
Are you ever confused between the terms cologne and perfume? There are many varieties of each on the market these days and the differences between the two could make the difference between you buying a good fragrance and a great one.
To be perfectly blunt about the difference between the perfume and cologne that you find on the shelves of many department stores and perfume stores these days is that cologne is generally a weaker solution than perfume. The cologne will contain less in the way of fragrant ingredients and more in the way of the base liquid which is one of the reasons that it is cheaper to buy. In contrast to this, perfume generally will have less in the way of alcohol and base compounds and more in the way of scents, making them more expensive and also more of a luxury.
Due to the increased fragrance content of perfume, the smell will last longer than what the smell of cologne will. The cologne has a smaller fragrance to base liquid ration and therefore will not last for that long on the skin when worn and it also means that cologne will need to be applied more often and also more liberally which in the long run could make it end up being more expensive to wear.
There are a few disadvantages to perfume over cologne however and one of the main negative points is the fact that on first application, the scent can be very overpowering and strong. This will of course die down after a little while to leave a pleasant and lingering smell but this can sometimes take a fair bit of time and therefore is not everyone's cup of tea. You will also find that perfume can sometimes be twice the price of cologne and very often for a smaller bottle.
Although the cologne versus perfume debate is generally answered on personal preference, there are advantages for both. However, sometimes it pays to have a little bit more luxury in your life!
