Periodontal Abscess
You may already know that periodontics is the treatment and care of your gums
, but did you know it also addresses what happens below your gum line? Your gums are only one part of the system that protects the roots of your teeth and jaw bone from severe brake down and if your gums are neglected you can put yourself at risk of more than just a toothache; you could develop a periodontal abscess.
Importance of Diagnosing an Abscess
An abscess, simply put, is a pocket that forms below your gum line and which can harbor dangerous bacteria and, over time, puss from infection. A periodontal abscess is often very painful, and may at first be mistaken for a cavity. The symptoms of a periodontal abscess are similar to those of the condition which causes it: gum disease.
It is relatively easy to prevent gum disease, but it can sometimes require extensive treatment, even periodontal surgery. Gum disease which is allowed to progress, however, can lead to severe problems, such as periodontal abscesses, even tooth loss. If a periodontal abscess is allowed to languish, it can also put you at greater risk of systemic problems, like:
Diabetic flare ups
Inflammation and fever
Blood Infection
Difficulty breathing
Heart disease and vascular infections
Like most dentistry patients, you may not realize that the health of your mouth and gums can directly affect your digestive system and other organs. Although it is an uncommon concern now, tooth abscesses were once a life-threatening condition to the average individual.
Symptoms of Periodontal Abscess
Although the symptoms of a periodontal abscess are similar to those of gum disease, they may be more severe, and may include:
Sensitive or painful gums
Bleeding or swollen gums
Loose teeth
Discolored gums
Plaque buildup and puss drainage
The best way to determine whether you have a periodontal abscess is by making an appointment with your dentist. As soon as you notice any change in your gums or tooth sensitivity, you should contact your dentist for an examination. Early treatment can help keep the cost low and protect your teeth, gums, and overall health.
Protecting yourself and your family from gum disease and associated tooth loss and other diseases can be as simple as making an appointment for a dental checkup.
