Periodontal Disease, Potentially Deadly
Most people believe gum disease to be limited to the oral cavity
. Unfortunately, nothing can be farther from the truth. A deteriorated condition have been known to provoke dangerous systemic diseases.
There are mainly two different types of gum diseases: Gingivitis and periodontitis. While the first is generally considered benign and reversible, the latter is a severe condition that must absolutely be attended to immediately.
The lack of flossing habits allows food residue to settle between teeth providing bacteria an ample food source. As a result of feeding, cavity and gum disease causing bacteria release toxins and acids that tend to stick to the surface of teeth. When left uncleaned, these wastes harden forming plaque.
Plaque provides a great shelter inside which bacteria continue to feed and reproduce undisturbed. Their ability to reproduce exponentially allows them to release great quantities of acids and toxins. In such conditions, their numbers can reach astronomical figures, several 10's of billions and more. Each bacteria releasing its share of dangerous waste products.
At this point, the bacteria have greatly strengthened their ranks. By constantly attacking the mouth digging ever deeper within the gum line, they eventually reach the very bone structure and ligaments that hold the teeth in place.
Waves after waves of targeted attacks put the immune system under great strains while it's struggling to fight off infection. But the sheer number of bacteria is simply overwhelming. The constant and massive assaults result in a weakened immune system and as a consequence the body is prone to other illnesses and viruses.
In short, periodontitis will: dissolve teeth, eat away gum tissue, destroy bone structure that holds teeth in place, weaken the immune system, and cause severe and persistent chronic bad breath. Problem is...that's not all, in some instances, they're just getting started.
The bacteria responsible for cavities and gum diseases have also shown the ability to penetrate the tiny blood vessels present in the mouth and travel to other parts of the body through blood streams.
Try to imagine billions upon billions of bacteria releasing acids and toxins powerful enough to dissolve teeth and bone structure traveling freely throughout your body...a scary thought! The extra oral diseases and conditions they provoke can be deadly.
These life threatening conditions include cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease, diabetes, bacterial pneumonia, metastatic infection, and pregnancy complications.
Anyone serious about their overall health should never let gingivitis deteriorate to periodontal disease. While gingivitis is easily reversed and simple to treat, periodontitis is a whole other matter. Always treat gum disease in its earliest stages.
