Personal Security: Ten Facts About The Different Defense Methods
The basic categories of self-defense product are taser
, stun gun, pepper spray and personal alarm. Which ever you choose it is important to read the instructions carefully and practise so you know exactly how to use the device whenever you need to.
1. Pepper sprays are legal in most states, though there are some restrictions on size, range and composition of the spray. In some states the sprays can only be bought from shops within the state, in others tear gas is mixed with the pepper.
2. The chemical which makes pepper spray effective comes from the same plant family as the potato. The effect is a burning sensation, an irritation of the mucus membranes which makes it difficult to breathe and speak and an irritation of the eyes which can lead to temporary (5-10 minute) blindness. Other plants in the same family include tobacco and deadly nightshade.
3. Taser stands for 'Thomas A Smith's Electric Rifle' The device was named after a book which the inventor, Jack Carver, enjoyed as a child. Carver first invented the device for use by sky marshalls on airplanes where a projectile could puncture the fuselage and cause decompression.
4. Pepper spray is effective on mammals but not on birds. The chemical doesn't come from the seeds of the plant but from the area around it. There is no reason to deter birds from picking up the seeds as this spreads them around. When mammals get the seeds they usually destroy them.
5. Stun guns only work when in contact. Low voltage guns need to be in contact with the skin, but high voltage guns can work through clothing. The higher the voltage, the thicker the clothing. Stuns are available in a wide variety of forms, and can be disguised as flashlights or more commonly, cellphones.
6. The current passed by a stun gun is extremely small. A current of 0.1 amp can be lethal, but most stun guns are only 0.003 amps or even less.
7. Stun guns are not legal in all states. Please check your state county and city laws.
8. The range of a taser is approximately 15 feet. The taser fires projectiles into the assailant and then sends electricity down the wire, pulsing for a period of 30 seconds. The range of a pepper spray is typically from 6 to 20 feet.
9. The purpose of stun guns and pepper sprays is to disable the attacker and allow you to get away. Some attack victims have failed to do this and instead waited to see if the attacker was badly hurt. This is not the way the device was intended to be used.
10. Most tasers are sold with a lifetime replacement guarantee. Because tasers fire into the attacker, you need to fire, drop the device and get away while the attacker is disabled. If you provide a police report of the incident your taser should be replaced free of charge.
