Personal and Home Security is More Pressing Than Terrorist Threat

Personal and Home Security is More Pressing Than Terrorist Threat

It seems like every time you turn on your television, the news reports another foiled or even worse successful terrorist plot. There was the failed Christmas Day plane bombing in Detroit, the anarchist para-military group in rural Michigan, the Fort Hood Massacrethe list goes on. You are constantly being barraged with reports of what the Federal Government is doing to protect Americans. Should wire-tapping be allowed? What about "enhanced interrogation techniques" like water-boarding? Could that quiet neighbor down the block really be a secret anarchist involved in some fringe Internet operation planning the next big terrorist attack on U.S. soil?

The truth is, the average American is much more likely to experience violence in everyday life. You will probably be mugged walking around in your Phoenix neighborhood or have your home burglarized long before you perish at the hands of a terrorist. So why is there such a fixation in the media with the terrorist threat, instead of with the quotidian violence that Americans are much more likely to experience in their lives?

First of all, the terrorist threat is much more sensational. There is a lot more for the reporters and anchors to actually report on in these stories, because it is something that most Americans have no real understanding of. Terrorist attacks generally don't happen in Kansas City. Robberies and burglaries, on the other hand, do. They happen every day in every neighborhood and can happen to anyone. They are not isolated events.

But, unlike the threat of terrorism, there is something you can do to protect your personal and home security from criminals and intruders.

The most important tip to follow is to not make yourself an easy target. This may seem obvious. But you'd be surprised at how many people get mugged while walking around an unfamiliar neighborhood late at night while talking loudly on their brand new iPhone after a few beers, and only afterwards realize what a stupid idea that was. So heed this example. Don't walk around alone after dark male or female if you don't know the neighborhood well. If you do find yourself in this situation, do your best to walk assertively and with purpose. Don't reveal any flashy pieces of technology Internet phones and MP3 players are the biggest offenders and at least make it look like you know where you're going!

These rules apply when you're taking public transportation as well. If you're in a subway car with 15 other people during rush hour, go ahead and listen to your iPod. But if you're traveling home alone after dark and there's only one other dude in the car, keep it in your bag and stare at the wall. Your slight boredom will pay off when you don't get robbed at knifepoint. It also makes sense to sit in the front car of the subway so that you'll at least be near the driver if something does occur. Make a note of different emergency procedures such as panic buttons as well.

Home security is important to protect as well. Lock your doors at night, and invest in a good home security system, and actually use it! There's no point in having a home alarm if you keep it turned off all of the time. Don't leave your garage open or leave expensive bicycles sitting in the backyard unwatched. And don't forget to shut windows when you leave the house, especially on the first floor!
