Pertinent Facts About Chinese Lunar Calendars

There is a belief among many people about the lunar calendar

. They think that it belongs exclusively to the culture of the Chinese. However, this is not the case because lots of Asian cultures have utilized this calendar for hundreds of years. The Chinese however, consider their lunar calendar one of their main traditional aspects and they still use it today.

In fact, the lunar calendar formed by the Chinese derives some of its qualities from those found in the solar calendar too. It is therefore correct to name it the lunisolar calendar. People from many nationalities have used the calendar to measure time for many centuries but China receives the rightful acknowledgement as one of the first countries that put the lunar calendar into practical use.

The Chinese still make use of the lunar calendar now but even though this is the case, they usually use the Gregorian calendar that receives worldwide acceptance when running the daily affairs of their country.

The people of China use the lunar calendar exclusively to mark important traditional events and holidays. These occasions include the Chinese New Year's Day, the Duan Wu Festivals and their Mid-Autumn festival. They still use the guidance of the lunar calendar to mark these major traditional holidays.

However, the Chinese also use the lunar calendar for various purposes other than to mark meaningful traditional occasions. They use the calendar to determine a date that will probably be good to hold special occasions such as marriage ceremonies or to begin new business ventures. They also use the calendar to measure the various stages of the moon because new months always start with the appearance of the new moon.

The lunar calendar is commonly called the agricultural calendar by the residents. The Gregorian calendar however is called the common calendar because it is according to that which the locals conduct their daily affairs. The lunar calendar is also called by the name Yin calendar in traditional Chinese language. The solar calendar is but basically considered to be the Yang calendar in this respect. The two the calendars are also referred to as the old and the new calendar respectively.

The Chinese lunar calendar records the present year as number 4706 in the Earth Rat's year. This year gets this name since the calendar assigns the rat as the animal symbol in the beginning years of the 12-year repetitive cycle present in the lunar calendar of the Chinese.

It is hard to tell whether using the lunar calendar of the Chinese is practical in our day. This is because the lunisolar calendar makes people encounter many difficulties as they make dates when compared with the Gregorian calendar that is much easier to use. In addition to this, the Gregorian calendar allows functioning and communication to go on smoothly because it has dates coinciding with each other all around the world. This makes it unnecessary to calculate between function and communication.

In this respect we find the lunar calendar has lost its position for date marking and has totally been replaced by the Gregorian calendar. Nonetheless you will find most of the calendars that are printed in China to be showing the dates originating from both the traditional lunar as well as the universally accepted Gregorian calendar.
