Peru Amazon Adventure: Tambopata National Reserve

The Tambopata National Reserve is a 679,539 acre (275,000 hectare) piece of spectacular land in the Amazon, officially protected by the Peruvian government since 1990. The reserve, and the Amazon as a whole, is threatened by those who make a living off of slash and burn agriculture, gold mining, logging, hunting, and fishing. The reserve was created with the philosophy of sustainable resource use to protect the forests, watersheds of Tambopata and Candomo rivers, and the wildlife within, as well as allowed locals to make a living. The Connecticut-sized area of forest contains approximately 1,300 bird species, 32 parrot species (10% of the world's total), 200 mammal species, 1200 butterfly species, and over 10,000 species of plants. Needless to say, wildlife viewing in this area is a remarkable experience.

Both the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park form part of the Vilcabamba-Amboro Conservation Corridor. The corridor contains 16 protected areas ranging from the Vilcabamba mountain range west of Cusco to the Amboro National Park in central Bolivia. It also contains the Manu National Park, the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary, and the Madidi National Park, among others. In addition to the land, the corridor also protects over 40 ethnic groups, and aims to strengthen local organizations and promote sustainable small businesses and agroforestry in an effort to minimize the loss of biodiversity.

There are a number of Puerto Maldonado lodges that offer excursions into the amazing Tambopata National Reserve. The Inkaterra Reserve Amazonica, Posada Amazonas Jungle Lodge, Refugio Amazonas, and the Tambopata Research Center all offer a variety of accommodations and tours into the Amazon.

Many times, accommodation in jungle lodges can be rather basic, due to the fact that you are isolated in a dense jungle. So do not expect a five-star resort if you are seeking isolation and a true wildlife experience. Be sure to pack long sleeves and bug spray to keep the creepy crawler off of you, as well as a hat.

Exciting tours of the region include early morning boat rides on Sandoval Lake, where you can see colorful macaws, noisy red howler monkeys, large anacondas, and sleepy turtles. Travelers can also walk above the treetops during a canopy tour. Search for caimans at night on the river's edge by scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the reflection of the light in the animal's eyes. Other night tours, like a night hike, are an excellent way to see wildlife like frogs, insects, and other nocturnal creatures.
