Peru Culture: Two Top Experiences

Others are more interested in the modern culture and how the people there are living currently. Historical Sites

There are so many archaeological sites to be toured in Peru when you book with a Peru travel agent, you could spend weeks just doing that. If this is what really gets you excited, you may want to narrow down your choices by picking representative sites of different cultures that have made their homes here.

Obviously, the key site for the Inca civilization is Machu Picchu. There are other sites to see when you are in and around Cusco, and you can see these either in the Sacred Valley or the city itself. The Inca Trail is a classic and visitng numerous sites when on the path is a great way to experience Peru and its history.

The Lord of Sipan tomb near Trujillo in the north of Peru is a good choice for learning more about the Moche culture which ruled in that region from 1 to 700 AD. This tomb is remarkable because it had not been found by robbers, therefore, there were many artefacts to be studied to learn more about this civilization. A nearby museum displays these pieces.

Further north, investigate Chavn de Huntar, accessed from Huaraz. This site is representative of one of Peru's oldest cultures, the Chavin, which ruled in that area from approximately 1500 to 300 BC. Whether you trek or take the car, this is a huge site that can be reached.

Peruvians of Today

You will notice that the culture of Peru changes greatly as you travel from larger cities to smaller ones and even more so when visiting tiny pueblos. In a huge city like Lima, the culture is modern and much like any large city anywhere. This is also largely the case in Arequipa, although not quite to the same extent.

When you get to a smaller city like Cusco, there are a lot of differences. This is a smaller city, and with it the use of other cultures has been a recent change. The younger generations tend to be the ones changing more than anyone else.

In the cities, you can get a feel for it by spending some time in spots where locals spend time. However, in the countryside, this is not so simple. And these areas are, in some ways, the most interesting because many of these pueblos are no more than a few houses grouped together where they live much as they did hundreds of years ago.

One of the best ways of interacting with these communities, generally located at a distance from towns or even a road, is by trekking. In the Cusco area, a common trek that takes you past several of them is the Lares Trek. This is a three day excursion that will take you to Ollantaytambo on the third day from where you can take a train to Machu Picchu.
