Peru Trekking Options
There are many things for a tourist to do during Machu Picchu luxury tours
, but one of the most popular in both of them has to be trekking. Peru is a large country with varied landscapes and lots of area that is lightly populated or populated only by the local fauna. They're great places for getting back to nature and getting away from it all. Understanding the available trails and deciding which one you want to take advantage of is a big decision, but you need to decide how challenging you want the experience and what landscapes you hope to see.
No discussion about treks in Peru would be complete without at least mentioning the classic Inca Trail. This has got to be the most popular of them all. It is a four day trek passing through various types of geography as well as past a number of archaeological sites. The fourth morning will see you hiking directly into Machu Picchu itself, the only trek on which this is possible. The pluses are obvious; the disadvantages are that it's a busy trail and the fact that limited permits cause it to sell out.
If you wanted to trek to Machu Picchu but the Inca Trail is sold out, the next best alternative (possibly an even better one) is the Salkantay Trek. You don't get to hike into the archaeological site but you do get to the closest town from which you can take a 15 minute bus ride up to the citadel the following morning. Salkantay is a less crowded trek and with the diversity of landscapes it passes through - such as high jungle and snow-capped mountains - it has been dubbed the nature trail.
If you're up for a really challenging trek and want to avoid crowds completely, you can't beat the trek to Choquequirao. This one also begins from Cusco but takes you to a completely different archaeological site and one that rivals the magnificence of Machu Picchu. With the trek the only way of getting there, and particularly difficult, it's not uncommon to have the spot to yourself when you arrive. If you're really feeling adventurous, you can opt for a longer trek that continues on from here to Machu Picchu.
Most people visit Peru with a Peru travel agent and have their hearts set on Machu Picchu in the southern part of the country and often don't have much time for visiting elsewhere. Those who are especially here for the trekking should take a look at what there is to offer elsewhere in the country as well. Huascaran National Park, located in the north near Huaraz, offers some of the best hiking to be found anywhere. The vistas are gorgeous, and include mountains, incredibly turquoise glacier lakes, waterfalls, orchids and more. There are also many types of wildlife that find their home here.
There are many day hikes that can be done in the area as well as longer treks as well. One of the most commonly trekked is the Santa Cruz trail which usually takes four to five days. For a longer trek, look at the Los Cedros trail which takes around ten days and, being more challenging, allows you to experience the park almost or completely on your own.
