Pest Control: Choosing The Right Insecticide

As any gardener will tell you, proper pest control is essential to the success of any beautiful garden

. For this reason, many chose to employ the use of insecticides as an effective way to control unwanted damage. In this article we will outline the steps necessary to safely applying these chemicals.

Choosing Your Poison

When purchasing the insecticide, inspect the label on the product. Be sure to choose the type recommended by the manufacturer for the desired application and use. If you plan to buy or rent a sprayer, choose one with an adjustable nozzle that is light enough to carry without worry of dropping and spilling the product.

Precautions

Wearing long-sleeve shirts, pants, and gloves will aid in protecting you from the hazard of getting the chemicals in your eyes or on skin. A good pair of goggles is never a bad idea either. Be aware of the directions concerning procedures in case of chemical contact with skin or eyes. Keep emergency numbers such as poison control in easily found areas in case of an accident.

Preparation

Mixing chemicals outdoors is recommended due to the potential inhalation hazards associated with harmful fumes. In order to test the sprayer, fill with water and leave adequate space within the tank to allow room for the insecticide once the test spray has completed. Once you have pumped enough air into the tank, spray the water to ensure it is in fact working properly.

Refer first, to the labels directions concerning mixing directions. Mix the chemical into the water and replace the lid. Make certain the lid is screwed on tight.

Application

Choose a time in which there will be at least a 24 hour period prior to exposure to water such as rain or sprinkler systems. Try attempting the application during early evening hours to avoid the risk that the sun's rays may magnify the droplets and burn the leaves of plants which the chemical comes in contact with.

During the spray session, make note that many insects often hide on the lower surfaces of leaves. Spray both the top and bottom leaf surfaces for optimal performance.

Cleanup

Disposal of the water used to rinse the sprayer and tank, it is recommended that you dump in areas where the chemical was applied.

Hopefully you now have a good idea of where to begin the journey. Take your time and enjoy! Before you know it, your yard will be pest free!
