The Yorkshire Terrier originated in England and was originally used by the working class to hunt small vermin. Later, the upper class became interested in the beautiful breed and entered them into show rings. Today, dog lovers of all walks of life enjoy this breed and welcome them into their homes.

This breed is famous for its long silky coat. The coat can come in blue or tan and needs to be combed every day or so to decrease the likelihood of matting.

Yorkshire Terriers have very big personalities that defy their small bodies. They are bold and stubborn, and are likely to take on adventures much too big for them. They are busy and inquisitive and you are sure to find them exploring every inch of their environment. Because they are so bold and believe they are much bigger than they are, they sometimes can be aggressive to other dogs and animals. One of the things least liked about this breed is their tendency to bark.

They do not need a lot of strenuous exercise, and usually a short walk or a fun play session with friends will suffice for their exercise needs.

The main health concern associated with this breed is patellar luxation. Patellar luxation is a condition that occurs when the kneecap moves in and out of place. This can cause pain for the dog and may lead to lameness.

Other health concerns to be aware of include achondroploasia, a genetic disorder that causes dwarfism and shortened limbs; Legg-Perthes disease, a degenerative disease of the hip joint where the blood supply is decreased and the joint becomes deformed; portacaval shunt, a condition in which the embryonic blood vessel in the liver fails to go away after the puppy is born; and tracheal collapse, the collapse of the cartilage around the trachea.

All of the health concerns above can result in treatment that costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. Pet insurance can help offset these costs, as pet insurance providers reimburse a portion of veterinary costs back to the owner.

These dogs stand between eight and nine inches tall and usually do not weigh more than seven pounds. They live to be between fourteen and sixteen years old.
