Peter DeGeorge and the 2011 Palmyra Panthers Outlook

One of the most consistent programs in the State of New Jersey for the past decade has been the Palmyra Panthers. The Panthers, who are routinely fighting for both a spot in the state playoffs and the conference championship, always rely heavily on the development of new student athletes who are always able to make a contribution on the field early in their Panther careers.

This year one of the biggest contributors to the team will likely be Peter DeGeorge. DeGeorge will enter the upcoming football season as a junior for the Panthers. Last season Peter DeGeorge filled in admirably for the Panthers as the team went on to win 7 games and lose just 3 as they went on their way to make the state playoffs. Throughout the year the Panthers had several lopsided victories over conference opponents such as Riverside, Maple Shade, and Burlington City.

While the team eventually lost in the state playoffs to Keyport by a score of 35 to 20, returning players such as Peter DeGeorge give the team a positive outlook for the upcoming football season. The 2011 Palmyra Panthers will likely once again compete for a conference title and are eyeing a perfect 6-0 conference record, which is something that the school has not achieved since the 2008 season.

Peter DeGeorge, who wears number 8 for the Panthers, will enter training camp with the ability to compete for a starting position on both sides of the ball. Last season Peter DeGeorge played on the varsity roster as a sophomore as he backed up both the starting quarterback and linebacker. At five feet, nine inches tall and nearly 170 pounds, Peter DeGeorge has the size, quickness, and speed to confuse the opposition on both sides of the ball.

Last season Peter DeGeorge was quite successful when he did get his opportunity on the field. DeGeorge accumulated a total of three tackles when playing on the defense and on the offensive side of the ball he made one carry for four yards. If DeGeorge fares well in camp he could easily see his statistical achievements and on the field time increase dramatically. DeGeorge could also see some time as the team kicker and punter next season. Last year during a game against New Egypt High School, Peter DeGeorge filled in as the extra point specialist and made one extra point. He also did the kickoffs during three games towards the end of the season.

Beyond Peter DeGeorge the Palmyra Panthers will have plenty of returning talent. This includes their star running back Alonzo Sadler. Last year Sadler ran for 900 yards, scored 7 touchdowns, and was named the team Most Valuable Player. Wide Receiver Nick Cannizaro is also returning and should compete for a position on the All-Conference team. Last year Cannizaro caught 29 passes, had 567 receiving yards, and scored 8 times.
