Pets and personal belongings in care homes

Pets and personal belongings in care homes

When moving into a care home there are a lot of things to think about. It's not unusual for those that are moving to be worried about their pets, furniture and other personal belongings.

When looking at different care homes, it is important to ask about their policy on pets and household effects before you move in. Some homes allow residents to bring their pets, but this is something that should be clarified upon visiting the home. It's worth remembering that whilst your pet may not be able to live with you, visitors may be able to bring the pet to visit you but again this is something that should be clarified with each home.

If you can't take your pet with you into the care home and you are struggling to find alternative arrangements for their accommodation, there are several organisations that can help you. Useful information about finding a new home for pets can be found on websites such as the RSPCA.

You may be able to take some of your own furniture in to your chosen care home. Furniture is often supplied but within most rooms, but it is worth checking as its always easier to settle somewhere new if you have familiar things around you. It's worth clarifying exactly what you can and cannot bring with you, large items for example that aren't easy to move into a care home could be sold, put in storage or given to friends. If none of those are possible options, you could always donate them to charity or ask your local authority to take them away on your behalf.

Smaller items such as pictures, chairs and tables are likely to be allowed for use in your room. When viewing the home it may be worth mentioning that you are happy for your items to be used in communal areas if that is the case and you really don't want to have to part with the items.
