This year many car manufacturers have struggled to sell new vehicles, the scrappage scheme has ended taking away a vital customer incentive to trade in their used cars for new ones. Manufacturers have felt the drop off in the number of new cars being sold.
Peugeot are one of the few car manufacturers that have been able to report year on year increases for new car sales in September 2010. Peugeot reported a 12% year to date increase in sales as well as growth in their market share
After the withdrawal of the Scrappage Scheme manufacturers had to be creative and come up with new incentives to attract new car customers. Most manufacturers introduced their own version of scrappage called "swappage" where the manufacturer would discount 2,000 - 3,000 off a new car, provided the buyer traded in a used car.
Peugeot did something different; they introduced the "Just Add Fuel" programme. This innovative idea from Peugeot enables customers to purchase a new car with the peace of mind of a single monthly payment, covering all their motoring costs.
New models in Peugeot's line up also helped, the sporty Peugeot RCZ was released in the summer and by September it was gaining momentum. It recorded its strongest sales performance in September with sales of 714 vehicles. A total of 1,450 RCZ models have now been registered since its launch in the summer of 2010.
