. We all know that Phil can putt and really get hot at times.

Well, I guess I could tell you that Phil uses an inside to inside putting technique. On the backswing, his putter moves towards his body, then his putter squares up at impact and, finally, it moves towards his body on the follow thru. It looks like a curved line going around his body.

So that is all you need to know to be a good putter right? Wrong! Many good putting pros use a straight back to straight thru putting stroke. Some use an inside backswing and straight follow through. So the secret to putting great like Phil is not necessarily in his putting pathline.

You may very well already have a putting path line you would prefer to continue using that is different from Phil. Yet, you can still putt like Phil. How is that for confusing?

Well the truth is that Phil's putting secret is less about his inside to inside stroke and more about his thoughtful construction of his putting stroke. Phil built his grip, setup (stance, posture, ball position and eye position), routine and putter selection completely around his putting style. When you learn how to build the components of your putting around your chosen putting path line you will know how to putt like Phil.

However, most amateur golfers overlook or just don't know Phil secret. They purchase any putter that looks good on the shelf; adopt any setup that feels good; and use any grip technique first presented to them. This is a terrible ideal that will make you fail at putting no matter what putting style you choose.

But the truth is that constructing a putting stroke is like piecing together a puzzle. All the parts must fit together to make the picture perfect putting swing. Jamming a putter, putting grip, putting routine, putting setup and putting technique together, conversely, causes a picture perfect disaster.
