Phillip Island is an attractive weekend and extended holiday spot within easy reach of Melbourne, Australia, the state capital of Victoria. It is about 140 kilometers (90 miles) south east of Melbourne at the entrance to Westernport Bay. It's the home of to a world-recognised Grand Prix Circuit, the Australian MotoGP motorcycle race event, the world famous penguin parade as well as the largest colony of Australian fur seals on the planet.
There is a big number of locals that live permanently on the island with a busy commercial base that serves them. This infrastructure adds to the standard and range of services enjoyed by tourists. The island hosts a wide variety of activities including surfing, lazy quiet water beaches, scuba, helicopter rides, cycling, golfing, boating, winery visits, motor-cycling, fishing, spa centres, kayaking, walking and canoeing.
The island attracts 1.5 million weekend and longer stay visitors a year. Some travel far from overseas. Others come from Victoria or other parts of Australia. They all find plenty of fun and leave with a smile.
It offers various holiday accommodation options most of which can be researched and booked online. Hotels, resort-style complexes, motels, guesthouses, serviced apartments, bed and breakfast, camping grounds and caravan parks are all available.
There are two pleasant golf courses available. Aussie Golfing Ranch is positioned along the coast on 23 acres of dunes and is thought to be a top Par 3 course. The PI Golf Club offers a full 18 holes and rates as a must-play course.
The island is large enough to be interesting to explore, having a total area of some 100 square kilometers. Being mostly flat, it is easy to travel around by bicycle or by walking. The highest point (110 metres) is at Cape Woolamai on the south east end of the island. The island has 100 kilometres of exciting but easily accessible coastline.
The north coast facing onto Westernport is home to some mangrove areas that is home to many fish and bird species, including many migratory birds. The best mangroves are protected by the Churchill Island Marine Park, based around the tiny Churchill Island. This islet was named by James Bass & Matthew Flinders during their circumnavigation of Australia in 1798. Today, it is home to quite a lot of small farming properties. Distinctive looking Scottish highland cattle roam its pastures, having been first introduced on the island in 1869 by A D Samuel Amess.
The world famous penguin parade is one of the most well-liked spectacles on the island. At dusk each evening, the cute fairy penguins emerge out of the ocean and waddle up the sandy beach to rest in their burrows dug deep into the beach dunes.
Racing car followers eager to live a track session can enjoy Hot HSV Laps on the Grand Prix circuit or experience go-karting on a smaller replica track near the main circuit.
Wallabies, kangaroos and possums are also abundant around the island. All these native animals can be viewed at the Phillip Island Wildlife Park on the main road to Cowes, one of the main towns on the island situated midway along its northern coast.
