VIsual Fox Pro Programming
VIsual Fox Pro Programming
I first started as a dBaseIII developer back around 1990, I bought a book on how to write 3 main types of dBase programs (any language really) and this started me on my x-base programming career, after struggling with these 3 programs for about a month, I gotta to work, then disected them to get a better understanding.
From there I caught wind of a dBase compiler called clipper, and I thought this cool, I can write programs, compile them, then distrbute them, maybe make some money. So I bought the software and learned it, Clipper is more C language oriented, the language it self is a mask for the C, most of it's functions are pure C.
After becoming comfortable with his new xbase type software and writing, testing and bullet proofing a few apps, I went out into the real world, my consulting job was with Montgomery Wards, I was teaching 3 recently graduated Computer Science majors to support a legacy system written in Clipper running on a novell network across the nation.
My first application was for a non-profit, they're organization took in several hunred dollars a day in donations, they sponsored many events, so there was money flowing in and out on daily basis, they needed a unique accounting pakage to control this, and also needed daily, weekly and monthly reports, this was a challenge and a good learning excerise.
Sometime later I was introduced to Visual FoxPro, my experience prior to this was all at the character based level of proramming, this instroduced objects, forms etc etc. I was soon creating applications that servered the direct mail processing industry, mostly for service bureau's, I wrote apps that mainly dealt with data manipulation, some applicaions I created I was able to put user friendly UI's on them and turn them over to Client Service's.
My master piece of visual foxpro development came in 1998 working for a service bureau in Chicago, the Client was the American Medical Association, they were getting into the Accreditation business, they had a database of 27 tables with one to one, one to many and many to many relations, it was controlled by a medical id unique key, there was 1 database for each of the 50 states.
I started with New Jersey, I had to recreate the database on our system (using Visual FoxPro), then create data entry screens, repair screens, CASS process screens, append, import, export functions, reporting functions, and some pretty eleborate algorithms. I also wrote some functionality for the use of a scanning pen, this it madie easier control the accreditation applications as they would travel from one process to another.
There was a huge printing process to this applicaion and project, we printed application for every Doctor in they're database (every state), about 250,000 - 300,000 copies, all personalized with the doctors information, these were then sent to the Doctors, who modified and updated the information, then sent back, after receiving the apps back they were sent to a data entry vendor, the actual applications were sent along with the electronic records specially formatted for this process, the applications and electronic files were updated and sent back for editing, confirmation and algorithm processing. After all processing was done on our end the final processing was done by the AMA, inwhich they had onsite evaluations done, inspections, back ground checks, license checks, credit checks and a slew of other confirmations were done.
Based on all of this checking, processing, confirmations, the AMA made a final approval or a rejection report, the information on who was rejected and who was confirmed was sent to us, we used this information to created certifications or rejection reports and then sent to the doctors.
The processing that goes behind the scenes to have a doctors name get on an insurance referral listing is huge, I know!
