Phoenix Security | Using Security Statistics To Secure Your Home

Keeping your family and home assets safe is a top concern for homeowners. Phoenix security officials point out that home invasion and burglary are still among some of the top property crimes in the nation, so it is vitally important to implement effective security in your home. Having a home security system is one of the best ways to deter crime. However, you shouldn't stop there. Proper security planning and general awareness of security trends will further help you protect your home.

Phoenix security experts state that it is important to take a look at some of the most common property crime trends and statistics when it comes to burglary and home invasion. When you know what some of these trends and statistics are you can more adequately combat them.

Forced Entry Crimes

Some burglars simply get into homes through unlocked doors and windows. Others must force their way in. This is called forced entry. Phoenix security authorities state that this is one of the most significant reasons to have a home security alarm (and to have it activated!). If a burglar forces their way into your home the sound of a ringing alarm will scare them away quickly.

Commonly Stolen Items

Some of the most commonly stolen items are jewelry, money, laptops, and guns. Knowing this it is important to keep these types of items safely locked away. Having some type of security safe is a good idea, but you can also hide these items out of the open in places that burglars may not think to look. Also keep in mind that burglars go for expensive electronics that are left out in the open--not bulky items like televisions, but smaller expensive electronics.

Length of Burglaries

Phoenix security authorities point out that burglars really only spend a few minutes in the home. They work quickly and efficiently. Again, having a home security alarm is important because it greatly shortens the amount of time a burglar will be in your home. If they do not immediately leave when the alarm goes off, they will at least no be inclined to stay longer than a minute which means that they have less opportunity to look for valuable items. Generally, burglars only stay in homes for 5 to 10 minutes at the most, but this is still quite enough time for them to get away with many of your most prized valuables. A ringing alarm will drastically cut this time down.

Where Burglars Look

Burglars have a habit of checking places where people either leave things out or where people are commonly inclined to hide things. For example, the living room and bedroom. They typically check dresser drawers and chests for jewelry and cash. They will also check under the mattress for handguns and other items. And the living room is often where they can find smaller electronics that they can easily transport out of the home. Phoenix security experts also note that burglars tend not to check children's bedrooms, so depending on your home this may be a good place to hide items.

Also Important To Know

The majority of career burglars will "case" a house before they decide to enter it. Phoenix security experts state that this is important to know because it means that the burglars may know if you "really" have an alarm system or if you are just displaying a security sticker in your window. They will also know if you "really" have a dog or if you just display a "beware of dog" sign for security purposes.
