UNIX - Linux Production System Development

Unix OS systems are work horses, there is no other operating system for processing large amounts of data bettor, granted there ia an assortment of flavors, but any UNIX based system out performs a windows OS with out argument.

They are great multi-user systems like the dinosaur Mainframes of yester year, they are much faster and built for batch processing and speed. I like UNIX OS systems because of they ease of use when it comes to automation, shell scripts are like a language comparable 4th generation languages but quick to learn and fast to get up and running, they're portable and capable of executing memory Hungary commercial applications from within a given script, in fact I have executed a script to exit and process a DOS application within DOS emulation, bounce back into the script only to exit into a UNIX programming language (in this case FoxPro), go back into the script, and finish the job flawlessly.

You can have scripts write scripts, execute the written scripts while processing the original scripts, this is very handy because windows systems get lost in all the memory allocations and memory releases. CronTabs is still one of my favorite scheduler for running jobs on specific days ate certain times, and UNIX's mail capabilities are unmatched for having you jobs email messages whether successful or in error to you, users or administrators while still processing. Shell scripts are easy to use for creating logs and creating intermediate files.

I have created text menu systems for executing several applications with disk checking, file maintenance, logging, scheduling, email notifications and cross platform processing, when I first started developing with UNIX I was amazed by its flexibility.

I have developed systems for Health Watchers of Scottsdale, AZ, The American Medical Association of Chicago, IL and others, I started on Mainframes back in 1986, but got into UNIX in 1995 and it has been my preferred operating system since then.
