Phoenix in Autumn: Packing Tips

Phoenix, Arizona is a beautiful scenic paradise any time of year, but especially in the fall. From the mountains and valleys to the lakes and the desert, this Arizona city has many sites to see!

However, because this is a desert city, the temperature ranges drastically from day to night. Commonly averaging a 25 degree fluctuation in temperature, it is vital to pack the correct clothing to maximize your comfort while staying in Phoenix. The name of the game is: layering!

The first tip is to pack more shirts then shorts, as shirts tend to be harder to reuse. Pack several different combinations of long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts that will match the few shorts you plan to bring. As far as jackets go, try to steer clear of the unnecessarily heavy and bulky type that do not travel well and steal suitcase space. Also, think in advance and decide how you will carry your extra layers with you while you are out traveling and site-seeing. For some a backpack will suffice, but depending on how many you are traveling with, a tote bag may also come in handy! Some type of bag will come in handy even if everyone decides to tie their long-sleeves and jackets around their waists because you need to keep in mind where the camera, video camera, keys, water bottles, etc . . . are going to be stored in when not in use.

Although averaging 99 degrees in the daytime and 72 degrees after dusk, September is the easiest month to pack for in Phoenix. 99 degree temperature may seem extreme to those who have experienced Florida weather, or even Gulf Coast states' weather, but it is a dry heat. The humidity in the southern and gulf states amplifies the heat, but is not the case in Arizona.

The best things to pack for a September or other fall visit to Phoenix are plenty of shorts, sandals (sturdier ones for hiking), hats, polarized sunglasses, and cotton clothing (allows for venting and does not get too hot). Most importantly however, is a good water-based sunscreen that's at least SPF 30!

Nothing is better than a September evening in Phoenix! With the temperature in the low 70's, a long sleeve shirt and light pants are more than enough to be comfortable. If you are one of the one's who feel chilly in the 60's, you may want to throw on a light jacket. Collared shirts are also great for men. Phoenix has only experienced 47 degrees once in the month of September, so odds are if you follow these tips, you will be covered!

Most Phoenix hotels and resorts are extremely casual so women can feel free and comfortable wearing dresses that don't cover their legs, along with a nice pair of sandals. Do not worry if you forgot to get a pedicure to go with your sandals, most of the resorts have on-site spas!

For those who like it a tad cooler to whip out there sports coats and long sleeve dresses, October averages a dry high of 88 degrees and cool low of 61 degrees at night. The lows have been known to drop into the 50's on occasion so the light coats will come in handy for those used to warmer weather. On the bright side, your coat can double as a pillow on the plane and in the car so it won't ever be wasted space!

Now in November, temperatures drop another average of ten degrees to a high of 75 and a low just north of snowing; the day allows for comfortable full length dresses and pants to be worn while the night calls for the perfect fireplace gathering weather.

Those wanting to place tennis or go out for a round of golf will want to pack warm-up suits in case of early morning or late afternoon games. Hiking sandals will also still be usable during the day in November, but shoes will be a must for the nighttime. Additionally, wearing your shoes to the airport will help save space in your luggage!

Great for mobility and ventilation, outfitter vests are priceless for many outdoor adventures and sports during the cold to help protect your torso and keep you warm. Knit caps can also be a life-saver for those who want to keep their ears and head warm. Cowboy boots will also impress locals and will be stylish while keeping your feet nice and warm when going out for a night on the town or to one of the many popular Phoenix restaurants!

Regardless of when you visit Phoenix, you can be guaranteed that you'll want to bring your swimsuit, and you won't need protection from the rain as the average rainfall during the fall is an estimated half inch. So save the space in your luggage and carry-on for all the presents you're going to buy!
