Save the date cards are a relatively new tradition when it comes to wedding planning and wedding stationary

Most people will send out save the dates prior to the wedding invitations if they have set the date but venue details are not yet finalized. This way you have warned guests to keep that date free but you have not committed them to arriving at any specific venue which is not confirmed.

The next most important thing is to state the date of the wedding and the general location, like the country or town. You may want to put something like Invitation to Follow or further details to follow, so that your guests will know that you will confirm all the final details like your venue closer to the time. You don't want them to be left wondering and thinking that you've left some details out.

It is not compulsory wedding etiquette to send save the dates but photo save the date cards are a nice touch and will get people excited for your big day. They will keep these on the refrigerator and will see your picture every day. This will make sure they don't forget your big day and that they feel included in everything.
