Phuket Thailand Nightlife Scene Experiences
I can recall my first visit toBangla Road in Patong,after a 9 hour direct flight from Sydneyto Phuket and a 45 minute taxi ride from the airport, I was feeling pretty tired but keen to check it all out. I checked into my room at -The Yorkshire Hotel, which isconveniently located right next to Bangla Road. I had a quick shower to freshen up, then me and my friend, headed strait out to the action.
We walked down the road and there were people everywhere and we were immediatelyharassed to see ping pong shows and to buy somesouvenirs orcigarettes. We walked further down the road, and there were many women (prostitutes) standing on the side walk in short skirts holding onto their handbagswaitingfor customers. We continued on down the road and could see many bars either side of us with music blaring over the top of each other and more ladies standing out the fronttryingto grab us as we walked past. As we kept strolling down, we came across a large gathering of people who were all standing around taking photos of what looked like beautiful tall Thai women, but as we stopped and had a closer look, werealised that these women were not real women, they were lady boys! We then walked to the end of the road and looked at each other and both agreed that we were not sure if we liked this place. It was too full on for us and the harassment was annoying, especially after a long day.
We walked down along the beach road and were considering walking back another way but decided to give it one more try. As we walked back along Bangla Road, we decided to go into one of the large Soi's located here. We walked in, and were pounced on by bar girls, strait away they grabbed us and tried to lure us to their bar. We had 3 of them on us at once, and they were all from different bars trying to pull us in. Again we thought this was crazy as they were screaming and yelling for our attention and looked so desperate. We had to get out of there as we felt uncomfortable enough as it wasbeforewe even walked in. We headed back to the hotel, as we had a big day and were tired, so we called it a night.
The next night, we headed back to Bangla to give it another go and at the time, we were still not sure if we liked the place, but went for another look anyway. We dodged all the people trying to sell stuff standing on the road and headed to a bar. I was grabbed again by a pretty bar girl and she sat us down and asked if we wanted some drinks. After buying a drink, she asked if I could buy her a drink, and one for her friend also, which I agreed to. She sat there and starred into my eyes and kept smiling, then pulled out a game of connect four. I could see that she had already finished her drink and she said in broken English, "We play connect four for drink"? I foolishly agreed and within 2 minutes, I had lost. I soon worked out that I wasn't going to win that game and that I would save more money by not playing it, as these bar girls play every night and are very good at it.
I asked for a bill and when I checked it, I could see that they charge double for lady drinks and I thought this is a scam, I need to get out of here. My friend and I decided to try and head off. We said goodbye and the bar girls looked offended and the cute one that I sat with said to me "You pay my bar fine"? I thought to myself, what the heck is a bar fine, so I asked? She goes "You pay 300 Baht for me and I go with you"? I thought WOW, I pay 300 Baht to relieve her duties at the bar, and this cutie is coming with me for the night. At the time I was thinking, I payed only 10 bucks Aus to do a girl a favour, and I have a hottie that is interested in coming with me for the night. I also thought, this isn't prostitution, because I payed her bar to relieve her of her duties for the night and she wants to come with me. At that time, i had no idea about bar girls.
After spending a wild night with her, I headed out for breakfast and then some sightseeing around Patong with my friend. When I came back to the room, she was still there sleeping and I thought cool, she must like me. She hung around all day and then later that night, she told me that she has to go back to work in her bar but if I go there with her and pay her bar fine, she can go strait away. I thought cool, and went with her to pay her fine. They charged 500 Baht this time as they said they charged 300 before, because it was near the end of the night. I thought, well ok, that's still pretty cheap so I payed the fine and we headed off. We went out to some clubs in Bangla Road and I thought to myself these clubs are crazy, they are full of beautiful women and they are all starring at me and even though im with a lady, I was still grabbed and touched, as I walked through the clubs. After some drinks and lots of stares, I decided it was time to head back to the hotel.
Another wild night was had with this girl and this time, she gets changed and ready to go early. She said to me "Ok I go now, you pay me"? I say huh? Then she goes "You pay me for Boom Boom"? - Which is their interpretation of sex in Thailand. It was at this stage, I felt like a fool but I was learning fast. I gave her 2000 Baht for the 2 nights and she was on her way.
Ok, I had learned some lessons about the nightlife scene here and even though everywhere I went in Bangla Road, they were trying to extract as much money out of me as possible, I was really starting to like the place, and so was my friend. What I liked about the place was the ratio of women to men and how much attention I got whenever I walked around here, which is a massive difference from where I am from. I also liked how easy the women were, as I don't like chasing women around all night to no avail back in Oz.
So with some lessons learned I realised that pretty much 99% of all the Thai women that are out on Bangla Road at night are prostitutes and even the ones that fill the clubs are too. Another thing that I later came to realise was prostitution in Thailand in some areas is a way of life and a lot of these women have kids to feed and by selling themselves, they have way more money then they ever could by working anywhere else. Don't get me wrong though, some of these women are young, have no kids and just don't want to work because they are simply too lazy to work.
I felt bad about paying for sex as I had never paid for it before and I felt like a fool for not realising that I was being played by a bar girl, but this is their job and this is what they do. I came to the realisation that I was on holidays and this is what Bangla Road is all about, and if I didn't pay some girl for Boom Boom again, then someone else will.
