Phuket is located off the western coast of Thailand and can be easily reached by land, sea or air with Phuket's International Airport receiving direct flights from countries across the globe.

Phuket is popular as an all-round holiday destination for backpackers, holiday makers, honeymooners and anyone in search of a tropical paradise to spend some time in. Divers flock to this Thai island as conditions for diving are pretty much perfect; clear, warm waters mean visibility can exceed 30 metres and the water temperature is ideal.

The variety of underwater life at Phuket dive sites is a feast for the eyes and you can spot whale and leopard sharks, manta rays, colourful coral and an abundance of different fish species.

Phuket lies just seven degrees north of the equator and its position in the Andaman Sea means there are plenty of top-class dive sites in close proximity.

There is an abundance of different dive companies to choose from and you can join a daytrip to enjoy a few dives in nearby areas or liveaboards for sites that are further away. The type of dive you can opt for varies too, from shallow water wrecks to wall diving and all at different levels of difficulty therefore suitable for beginners as well as advanced divers.

The Phi Phi Islands are a popular choice with divers because there are a large number of dive sites in a concentrated area, meaning you can easily enjoy three or more dives at different sites, all in one day. One of the most popular Phi Phi dive sites is located at the southern tip of Ko Bida Nok, a small island found south of the Phi Phi Islands.

Shark Point is another of the most popular Phuket dive sites and, as the name suggests, you are likely to spot Leopard Sharks and Whale Sharks here.

Less than a mile north of Shark Point you can find a decidedly different dive site at Anemone Reef, where a gigantic lime-stone peak rises 30 metres from the seafloor. This unique structure attracts sea anemones and large schools of tropical fish such as clown fish, barracuda, snappers and lion fish.

If you fancy exploring a wreck then head to King Cruiser Wreck dive site which has multiple decks and plenty of areas to investigate.

If a wall dive is on your to-do list then seek out Koh Dok Mai, a small island between Shark Point and Phuket which is regarded as one of the best wall dive sites in the whole area.

All of the above dive sites can be easily reached from Phuket on a day trip but if you want to embark on a liveaboard dive holiday then the sites at Koh Bon, Koh Tashai and Richelieu Rock are all popular choices.

Whether you decide to opt for day trip locations or a longer, liveaboard option, Phuket diving certainly won't disappoint. World-class dive sites, year round tropical weather and superb scenery guarantee a dive holiday to remember.
