Physocarpuscapitatus - Pacific Ninebark Is Another Fast-growing Choice

Gardeners love the Pacific ninebark (Physocarpuscapitatus) for several reasons

. It can grow fast, grow under various environmental conditions, and grow to be a plant of beauty. Such growth aspects mean that the tough shrub provides interest to any garden for all the seasons of the year.

The Pacific ninebark will grow up to 12 feet in height and width. It must then have sufficient space to grow to its full beauty, which is characterized by a multi-stemmed appearance. It can then be used as a slightly arching thicket with graceful branches, just perfect for landscapes with a wooded ambience or for gardens as a mixed hedgerow.

When used in these ways, the tough shrub provides good nesting sites and good cover for birds. Its flowers, in turn, attract many types of pollinators from birds to bees.

Pruning is necessary to keep the shrub's naturally scraggly growth in check, which will also emphasize its graceful shape. Doing so is also essential to keep the Pacific ninebark looking lush and full.

Where to plant it? Experts suggest in areas where erosion control is essential such as in a slope or waterway. It strong and extensive root system is great for this purpose.

The Pacific ninebark thrives in full sun to partial shade with the soil conditions ranging from moist to fairly wet. Don't let the shrub get too dry lest it withers up and die. Supplemental water will be necessary during unusually dry weather conditions but it is not a good idea to drown the plant in water either; just make sure that the soil is moist most of the time.

Beware, too, about the invasion of aphids and powdery mildew but such attacks are not frequent so you can breathe a sigh of relief. In general, the Pacific ninebark is generally a trouble-free shrub.

When in full bloom, the Pacific ninebark is, indeed, a pretty plant. Its lobed, toothed deciduous leaves are slightly crinkled with dark to bright green colorations akin to the maple and currant leaves. Its reddish-brown bark provides a colorful contrast against the green leaves.

The clusters of flowers are dainty but attractive, nonetheless. The reddish-pink flower buds open to reveal tight clusters of tiny white flowers, which appear from April to July. These are soon followed by pinkish-brown seeds that provide contrast against the peeling bark of the shrub.
