Piano Lessons - What Age Can My Child Start Piano Lessons

In fifteen years of teaching lessons to over one thousand students, I have taught students as young as three, right on up to seventy-eight. What I found is the most effective age to start young children is anywhere from four to five years old.

I have started children at three and what I found was that if the student was not conversational, meaning they can't easily carry on a conversation with me in English and really understand it, then they are not quite ready to take piano lessons. Piano is a complex instrument, and the child must be able to be conversational so that they both understand and retain what they are learning.

If your student is four years old and they can easily converse with me and understand everything that's being said, they are ready to start lessons if they are interested. Other than that specific language concern, five years old is fine to start anyone on any instrument. From five years on up, they can easily learn and understand what's going on. On the lower end of the scale age-wise, around four to four-and-a-half seems to be the questionable area. The best barometer I've found is "How conversational is the student?"
