Piano Maintenance Tips
If you want your piano to stay in a good shape for the long run, use the following tips:
Keep your piano tuned - tuning is adjusting the pitch of every note by re-tightening the strings of the piano. The piano is designed to sound its best when tuned to the international pitch standard of A-440 cycles per second. Keep in mind that piano goes out of tune whether used or not and it is preferably to tune the piano at least once a year.
Don't try to tune the piano by yourself- piano tuning should always be done by an expert. It requires the right tools, parts and expertise so you better leave it to the professionals. An attempt to fix the piano yourself can be costly.
Keep the right climate next to the piano- the piano is sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature because it is made primarily from wood. Changes in humidity and temperature can cause your piano to sound out of tuned. In warm and humid weather the strings and moving parts will expand, causing the pitch to rise while in cool, dry weather they will contract, causing the pitch to fall. Therefore you better keep your piano away from fireplaces, radiators, air-conditions and direct sunlight. Also, you better place the piano next to an inner wall so it will be less exposed to changes of temperature and humidity. The idle temperature is between 68 - 72 F (20- 22 C) and the idle humidity levels are between 40 to 45.
Keep your piano clean- clean the keyboard and all finishes with a soft, dry cloth. In cases of dirty area, use a cloth dipped in a solution of soap and don't forget to dry the area thoroughly afterwards. Avoid using cleansing fluids as the oils in them may damage the wood.
No drinks in the vicinity of the Piano- keep vases, drinks, and any kind of liquid away from your piano. Once a liquid is spilled into the piano it can cause a substantial damage.
Avoid moving the piano by yourself- since the piano is very heavy and fragile instrument, moving the piano requires safety measures. You better use a professional piano mover to move your piano, unless you want to break your back while damaging your piano.
