In any of these situations, your success in court is likely dependent on your attorney. Here are some things to consider when picking one.

Area of Expertise

A lawyer will usually specialize in a somewhat narrow area of the legal field. When looking for an attorney, it's important to find one who can handle your case without needing to catch up on the field. Experience is important, but it's even more important that the experience they have is relevant to your case. If you're going through a divorce, you don't necessarily need an attorney with 20 years of criminal trial experience. You do, however, need someone who will see the twists and turns of a case before they come around. This is a skill that can only be developed through time and practice.

Success Rate

This is a field of interest that can be difficult to nail down and it is one that potential clients usually place more importance on than it really deserves. Let's say, for instance, that a particular attorney's win/loss record was easily available. What would it really tell you? If you just looked at the percentage rate, it might not tell you as much as you think. A lawyer with a lot of "losses" may not consider them as such. If they managed to secure a jury award for much less than the plaintiff was asking for, it could be considered a win. If an attorney often gets much more favorable sentences for his clients (even if they are still found guilty), they may be better than their record suggests. Don't put too much importance on success rates, especially since they are hard to find.

Referrals and Reviews

The best way to find a lawyer is through someone you trust. Sometimes this may be another attorney. For instance, you regularly retain a lawyer for your business purposes. You trust him implicitly, but he is the first to acknowledge that he isn't right for your divorce proceeding. He may be able to refer you to a colleague of his that he knows will be perfect for the case. This is an example of a good referral that works for all parties involved. You may also know someone who has used legal representation recently and can recommend someone for your case.
