Picking the Right Head Lice Comb

Picking the Right Head Lice Comb

Removing lice eggs, or nits, is the most important step in treating and removing a head lice infestation. Removal of all nits depends on picking the proper nit comb. Without removal of ALL nits the infestation will reappear and you'll be doing it all over again. Talk about frustrating.

Let's talk about a couple different types of combs, the plastic and metal nit comb. The teeth from the metal comb are much more effective at removing nits. The nits will either stick to the metal comb as you use it or be destroyed from the metal teeth. The plastic comb will work but will take much longer and will likely leave a few nits in the hair. Not good. The plastic comb can be used, however, before using the metal comb to get all tangles and knots out of the hair. This will make the job of the metal comb that much easier.

Let's break down the metal comb a little further. There are two types you can purchase, a short or long-toothed comb. The metal comb should be purchased based on the hair length: short teeth for short hair, long teeth for long hair. Pretty simple to remember.

You might ask, where do I find these combs. Well, they are becoming much easier to find than in times past. Manufacturers have finally caught on that these combs are more effective than the plastic combs. You should be able to find them in the drugstore and even grocery stores are beginning to carry them in the health care section. If you can't find one, ask the pharmacist.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to find the correct nit comb and how important it is to take your time and do it correctly the first time. If you don't, you will find yourself doing this over and over again. Nits are tough and don't want to come out. Get the proper comb and you will defeat these pesky parasites.
