The Botanical Gardens in Hanoi (Vuon Bach Thao) do not conform to the typical perception of a scientifically-inspired botanical garden. Rather than being a carefully regulated, unappealing technical exercise, the Hanoi Botanical Gardens is a vibrant, refreshing and rejuvenating venue where the weary traveller can rest from the exertions of exploring the city, or spend a leisurely afternoon.

This picturesque park was originally designed in 1890 by landscape artists from France. Subsequent to the defeat of the French in 1954, the countrys government refashioned the park and opened it for the benefit of the public.

The Botanical Gardens occupy an extent of 50 acres and includes two small lakes. In the midst of the bustling city of Hanoi, this oasis of greenery is a delight for the urban resident or visitor. A small islet within the park forms an ideal location for a romantic rendezvous, and is very popular among young couples.

The park contains several trails which are used by joggers and soccer players for their warm-up routines. Often many informal games and matches are played on the gardens grassy lawns, and children can frequently be seen playing badminton.

A spot on the gardens east side has been devoted to the display of the parks renowned concrete sculptures. This collection of sculpture has gained international fame and is considered to be a demonstration of the artistic abilities of the Vietnamese people.

The Botanical Gardens are a delight for the bird watching enthusiast, with a wide array of bird species making their home in the tall trees of the park. These include the White Throated Fantail, Red Whiskered Bulbul, Common Tailorbird, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Japanese White-Eye and Oriental Magpie Robin.
