Pidirutalagala- Over The Top

Looking down on the town of Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka's famous hill resort

, Pidurutalagala stands at 2524 meters above sea level, the highest mountain peak in the country. Being a prominent presence around Nuwara Eliya it can be seen from all parts of the town and on clear days is beautifully reflected in the waters of Lake Gregory at the centre of town. Covered by lush montane rainforests, it is located in one of the most important eco region of Sri Lanka and is home to a rich biodiversity. The cool climate of the mountain enables it to host a variety of endemic flowering plants, vertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, trees, shrubs, mosses and ferns. Some of the plant species found here is reported to be globally endangered. Pidurutalagala is also part of the catchment for some of the country's major river systems. Its elevation also contributes to the cool temperatures year round and to ground frost in December and January the coldest months of the year.

Although the summit of Pidurutalagala presents beautiful panoramic views of the Nuwara Eliya town below and the surrounding peaks, it is off limits to visitors as several important broadcasting and communication towers and transmission stations are locate atop. Hiking is allowed up to 7,000 feet. The climb is an easy one as hikers can follow the road leading to the summit with many waterfalls and red flowers of rhododendron bushes adding to the natural beauty of the area. However during the wet months high winds and a mist covered landscape with poor visibility are to be encountered here. The best time for hiking is between the months of April and May, the warmest and driest part of the year. Pidirutalagala has the distinction of being listed in the World Country High Points peaks list.
