Pigeon Infestations: How To Deal With Pigeon Pests

Pigeons can be found throughout the UK in every town and city

, in agricultural areas, warehouses, city parks, buildings and under bridges. For most of us they are a just another urban bird that we have become accustomed to seeing, but for many people they are a real nuisance and can cause aggravation and stress.

Pigeons flourish in built up, highly populated areas. Not only do they have an abundance of food, they also have many areas in which they can nest and find shelter, preferring flat secluded surfaces including eaves, windowsills and ledges. They will also nest in gutters, causing problems for homeowners.

Pigeons have become reliant on humans, feeding on food in uncovered rubbish bins, roosting and nesting in manmade structures and as a result have become dependent on us.

Pigeons are the most identifiable and familiar bird in the UK. They are around 11 inches long and weigh about 13 ounces and grey in colour. But aside from what you can see, there is a lot to a pigeon that you cant see.

Pigeons carry numerous pests including fleas, mites and ticks, which can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. In addition, pigeons can carry diseases themselves and can contaminate food with life threatening Salmonellosis. In addition, the numerous droppings they leave behind are a health hazard.

Pigeons also cost councils a huge amount of money each year in restoring buildings, statues and other structures. Pigeon droppings are corrosive and a build up of droppings will accelerate the ageing of the structure and can cause instability with many structures posing a danger to people if not prevented or restored.

There are several preventative measures that people take. Some people use decoys or items to scare pigeons away, but over time they become acclimatised to these and so the problem continues to persist.

The most effective way to prevent pigeons is to deny them areas for nesting and roosting. Cover up gutters, install wire string or spikes on or above flat surfaces. Vents and gutters should be sealed or covered. Nesting on ledges, eaves or windowsills can be deterred by installing tightly strung wire or string just above the surface. In addition, make sure that you clean up food, dont feed pigeons and generally deny them a food source.

If you have a pigeon infestation and dont know what to do about it, you will need to call the professionals. They have the equipment, knowledge and expertise to ensure that your pest problem is eradicated and wont return. They will safely eliminate pigeons as well as determine why they are infiltrating your premises and will give advice on how to prevent another infestation in the future. In the long run you could save yourself a lot of time and money.
