Pilates is a known method of physical exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates

during the First World War to enhance the rehabilitation program for the returning war veterans. Pilates has extended and has been integrated into other different fitness exercises like yogalates - a combination of Yoga and Pilates and other gym workouts, making it one of the most sought-after fitness exercises. One of the most favorite workouts is the Pilates abs workout.

There are different Pilates abs workouts that can be mastered. But for a start, let's discuss 3 abs exercises using Pilates. For beginners, it is necessary that you consult your physician first before doing any exercise routine to avoid health complications. All abs exercises begin with warm up routine. This helps in conditioning and preparing the body and muscles for any routine it will go through.

The Hundred

This is a classic Pilates mat exercise that requires proper breathing and body movement coordination. To practice breathing, you lie on your back and relax your muscles. Breath in through the nose and out through the mouth for several times until you get used to it. Now, rest your hands on your side and raise your legs up to 45-degree angle. Lift your head and neck from the mat up to a certain level and engage your abdominals while doing this. When raising your head, make sure you are looking into your abdomen. Breathe out as you raise your head and engage your abdomen and in when you are about to lay your head back. Do this for 10 repetitions.

The Roll Up

This is another exercise for the core or the abdomen. Lie on your back, hands on the side and breathe in. Then, raise both arms upwards - just over your head and breathe in. Next, raise your upper body up to a sitting position just in 4 counts. Breathe one slowly while doing this until you reach out towards your feet. Breathe in again and slowly go back to your original position on 8 counts. This is good for 6 repetitions.

Rolling Like a Ball

This exercise challenges your core. Again, on your Pilates mat, lie on your back and breathe in. Basically, from this position, you are going to hug your knees, so you bring them together towards your chest and lift your head, neck and shoulder off the mat so you can hug your knees. Once your arms are wrapped around both knees, breathe out and maintain gazing into your abdomen. Breathe in as you go back to your relaxed position. You can do this 5 times in a workout session.
