Piriformis Syndrome - Everything You Need To Know

Are you suffering from pain in your hip or down your leg

? Have scans or MRI shown that the discs are normal? The Piriformis muscle in your hip could be the cause of this pain. The Piriformis muscle sometimes presses down on the sciatic nerve which is what causes the buttock pain or pain down the leg, which are classic symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome.

Common Causes Of Piriformis Syndrome :

The Piriformis muscle is a small muscle in the hip which runs from sacrum to the outer hip bone. There are various factors that can cause Piriformis Syndrome. They are as follows-

Piriformis muscle spasm can put pressure on the sciatic nerve. This may result in buttock pain or pain down the leg (sciatica). This pain increases with the contraction of muscle, prolonged sitting or direct pressure on the muscle.

The shortening of Piriformis muscle and compression of the nerve results in Piriformis Syndrome.

Poor body mechanics and poor alignment of lower extremities (foot, ankle and knee) also contribute to Piriformis Syndrome sometimes.

Sudden change in running, walking or lifting programmes (or if it is overdone) also causes Piriformis Syndrome.

Treatment For Piriformis Syndrome:

Following are various aspects that can help you in providing relief in Piriformis Syndrome-

Hip musculature should be stretched and strengthened. A good stretching and strengthening program can bring positive results.

It is very important that your lower extremities (foot, ankle and knee) are flexible & are effectively capable of handling any stress placed on the hip.

Muscles like Hamstrings, Quadriceps, Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles should be stretched properly. Fibrotic patterns in these muscles can be reduced with deep tissue foam rolling. This will eliminate any chances of dysfunction in these muscles.

Wearing proper footwear or inserts can provide relief upto some extent to those suffering from pain related to Piriformis Syndrome
